Now in its 20th year, the HVCA Annual Investment Conference brings together some of the key investors and business figures from the world of private equity, venture capital and direct investing in CEE. Headline speaker this year will be Christian Majgaard, the pioneering brand and business culture visionary credited with transforming LEGO from a low tech plastic toy manufacturer to a 21st- century brand as Creative Genius and Head of Global Brand & Business Development at LEGO. Joerg Bauer, former head of GE Hungary and owner of Tungsram Group will present the Tungsram story: revitalization of the innovative Tungsram heritage and their pursuit for future-safe technologies. Other speakers analyse the business opportunity provided to private equity investors by strategic exits. Participants also discuss the potential and challenges of the fintech sector – from both entrepreneurs’ and investors’ points of view. Tamás Szalai

Title: Investment Director
Company: CEE Equity Partners

Graduate of the Budapest University of Economy (1991), Master of Science in Finance, University of Illinois, USA (1996). Started his carrier as a journalist at the business daily, Napi Gazdasag and the weekly HVG. Later joined the leading local securities and asset management company, Concorde Securities Ltd as the head of the equity research team. Since 2000, as private equity professional, invested over 600 million euros in various Central Eastern European targets, among others, in auto parts, food service, media, education and telecommunications companies. Has been acting as board member and chairman of board at various companies. Joined CEE Equity in the summer of 2014 with Hungarian and regional responsibilities. CEE Equity now investing from its second fund which has USD 800 million in total commitments. Prior he was managing partner of the Eastern European focused Virgin Green Fund for two years, before that partner of the Eastern European focused Bancroft Private Equity for 12 years.

Tamás Tüske

Title: Vice-President and Country Director Hungary

Tamás Tüske is country director at Enterprise Investors responsible for Hungary, where he was involved in the acquisition of the country’s largest online insurance broker Netrisk.hu and Scitec Nutrition, leading European producer and distributor of sports nutrition products. Before joining EI, Tamás worked for Ernst and Young (today EY), KPMG and Waberer. He is the chairman of the Board of Directors of Netrisk.hu and member of the Supervisory Board of Scitec Nutrition. He joined Enterprise Investors in 2007.

Levente Zsembery

Title: Chairman of the HVCA, CEO

Levente is the CEO of X-Ventures and the Chairman of the HVCA. Before joining the team he gained experience as investment banker at UniCredit CAIB, director of capital market transactions at Hungarian State Motorway Management Company and independent adviser for different institutions like the Budapest Stock Exchange, the Hungarian Development Bank, the Hungarian Financial Supervisory Authority but also worked on the World Bank’s project for the development of the Hungarian Student Loan System. Levente graduated and got his PhD degree at Corvinus University of Budapest.

Zoltán Lengyel

Title: Partner

Zoltán Lengyel is the managing partner at Allen & Overy Budapest with more than 20 years of experience in business law. Zoltán specialises on M&A and capital markets transactions. He has extensive experience advising clients in various sectors, particularly financial institutions. Zoltán is a member of the Advisory Board of the Capital Markets Law Journal of Oxford University Press. He is consistently recommended in the major legal directories and was part of the team that was awarded “Hungarian Law Firm of the Year” by the IFLR.

Ferenc Karvalits

Title: Director

Ferenc Karvalits graduated from the Budapest University of Economics in 1988, and later worked there at the Department of Finance as a lecturer and researcher. In 1990 he started his banking career and from 1996 he was the head of Banking Relations at the National Bank of Hungary. From 1998 to 2001 he worked as the managing director of the National Bank of Hungary and member of the Board. After that he was the deputy CEO of Wallis Zrt. until 2002. Between 2002 and 2005 – while still a member of the Board at Wallis Zrt. – he was the co-CEO of CIB Bank. In April 2005 he was appointed president of FHB Bank. From 2007 to 2013 he worked as the deputy president of MNB responsible for monetary policy and reserve management, and member of the Monetary Council. From 2013 he has been the director of strategy at Wallis Asset Management Zrt. and – at the same time – from 2014 he has participated in the management of Venturio VC Fund Management Co. ,then PERION VC Fund Management Co. as a strategic advisor, and later as a member of these Boards.

Robert Manz

Title: Managing Partner

Robert is a Managing Partner of Enterprise Investors, a leading private equity fund management company in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). EI has raised nine funds totaling €2.5 billion, invested in 140 companies in the CEE region, and exited more than 125 companies, including over 30 public market listings. Having joined Enterprise Investors at the firm’s start in 1990, Robert is one of the longest-active professionals in CEE private equity, with 28 years of investment experience. Robert was the founding President of the Polish Private Equity Association (PSIK), established in 2002, and has served on PSIK’s board for 14 of the past 16 years. He currently also heads the PSIK Philanthropy Committee and is a board member of the Valores Foundation, Poland’s first venture philanthropy fund. Robert is also Chairman of the Central and Eastern Europe Task Force of Invest Europe since 2003. Prior to joining Enterprise Investors, Robert worked with Dillon, Read & Co., an investment bank based in New York, in its M&A advisory business. Robert graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, summa cum laude, with a degree in Finance and Management of Entrepreneurship.

András Molnár

Title: CEO

András Molnár is the CEO of PortfoLion that manages seed and growth-stage venture capital funds and a later-stage focused private equity fund, totaling EUR 60 million. András joined PorfoLion in 2010 right at the start of the company. Throughout his career he has gained experience in investing across multiple-stages and managing innovative, technology focused start-ups both in the United States and in Hungary. Previously, he worked as an analyst at the Central Bank of Hungary, then he was the head of international business development at KÜRT Ltd., after that he became the CEO of the American KÜRT Security LLC which was funded with venture capital investment. Later on he joined a Northern Virginia-based VC firm, McLean Capital, where he was working until the start of PortfoLion.

Seres Béla is the Financial Advisory service line leader in Deloitte EMEA. He has over 20 years of Transaction advisory experience in various corporate finance transactions. Joerg Bauer

Joerg is the owner, President & CEO of TUNGSRAM GROUP, a company resulting from the purchase of the GE Lighting business in Hungary and subject to regulatory approvals the proposed purchase of its activities in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, RCIS and Turkey, as well as GE Lighting’s Global Automotive business. Headquartered in Budapest, TUNGSRAM GROUP is a Hungarian multi-national company with global activities in Supply Chain, Sales & Distribution, and R&D and more than 4,000 staff. While keeping its focus and strength on its Lighting core capabilities, TUNGSRAM GROUP will quickly diversify into new, innovation-driven industries, drawing on its state-of-the-art supply chain capabilities and its highly trained workforce; its legacy of excellence of more than 120 years. Previously Joerg had been President of GE Hungary, representing GE in Hungary with more than 10,000 employees in 12 plants, 4 R&D and engineering centers and one of GE’s five Global Operations Centers working to provide solutions exported to GE’s markets around the globe Prior to this role Joerg was the CFO for GE Healthcare in CEE. Earlier experience includes international Finance and Management assignments with Audi and Mettler-Toledo, partly also based in Hungary. Born and raised in Germany, Joerg started off as an apprentice banker with a local branch of Deutsche Bundesbank and holds a double Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Cologne and in International Management (CEMS MiM) from Cologne and Corvinus, Budapest; earlier he had been a one-year visiting student at Oxford University. He started his career as a member of GE Capital’s Financial Management Program in London. 2017 Joerg was named Expat CEO Hungary of the year. For his work strengthening the American-Hungarian economic relation and the competitiveness of Hungary he has received the Dr. Iván Völgyes Award presented by the American Chamber of Commerce and the Knight of Cross from the Order of Merit of Hungary. Next to his work-related responsibilities, Joerg serves as the president of the Board of Trustees of the Sports University in Budapest. He also co-leads the Innovation Task Force of the Hungarian American Chamber of Commerce and is one of the two vice presidents of the Hungarian Association of International Companies. Recently Joerg became the president of the advisory board of the Corporate Volunteering Council, Hungary.

Tamás Bernáth

Title: Chairman-CEO

Tamás Bernáth is an economist with a postgraduate diploma in law and holds an MBA from INSEAD. He worked as project manager at international consulting company McKinsey from 2000 and Erste Bank from 2003. He was co-founder and managing partner of financial advisory firm Scale Consulting between 2004 and 2010, and partner at PWC Hungary’s advisory services between 2010 and 2012, and OTP Bank’s Managing Director and Member of the Board of OTP Russia from 2012 to 2014. He was Chairman & CEO at BNP Paribas Cardif insurance company from 2014 to 2016. Tamás was appointed as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MFB Hungarian Development Bank Private Limited Company as of November, 2016.

Christian Majgaard

Title: Former Head of Global Brand & Business Development

Christian Majgaard headed brand and marketing strategy for Lego serving as Head of Global Brand & Business Development, and as a member of the global executive team. Acclaimed by Fons Tompenaars as one of 21 leaders for the 21st century, Christian is a highly respected figure in marketing and innovation. At Lego, Christian’s 25 year career with the company took in positions including Head of International Market Research and Head of EU Marketing. Ultimately he had overall responsibility for global brand, products and campaigns for both the core toy business and other areas – from licensing to theme parks. He also led the internationally recognised brand into the computer games market, and film merchandising with the Star Wars, Harry Potter and Spiderman franchises whilst never ignoring the core product. Christian now divides his time between creative and brand consulting, non-executive roles, writing and speaking. In presentations he explains why branding is about business development, not communications. Using both Lego and Starbucks as examples, he maintains there’s no such thing as mature markets – only tired marketers.

Zoltán Krausz

Title: Central-Fund

Zoltán is an Investment Director with Centrál-Fund. He is involved in the management of three funds (turnaround, growth and seed) of the Centrál Group withe a key focus on acquisitions and the leadership of turnaround efforts of certain portfolio companies. Zoltán has over 16 years experience in diverse corporate environments. Before joining the fund he was working for Accenture’s Strategy Consulting practice executing various reorganisation and business development projects in Hungary and Europe. Soon after he set up and lead the business consulting division of the KFKI Group (later T-Systems Hungary), coordinated the integration of a new acquisition in his area of responsibility. Directly before joining Centrál-Fund he took part in the reorganisation of the MVM Group setting up, growing and leading the group level portfolio management department. Zoltán is a regular guest lecturer at Budapest Corvinus University’s BSc and MSc courses. Since 2007 he is also active as an orgnization development trainer, supervisor and coach.

Cyril Gouiffes

Title: Impact Investment Manager

Cyril has been an investment manager within the venture capital team of EIF for the last five years. He is responsible for the management of EIF social impact instruments portfolio at EIF: Social impact funds investments Social Impact Bonds, co-investment with Impact Business Angels and Investments in impact incubators. His entire career within EIF has been dedicated to impact related activities, starting with microfinance in 2008. In this context, he was responsible for the implementation of the JASMINE programme, an EU initiative aimed at boosting the institutional capacity of microfinance institutions in Europe. Prior to joining EIF, Cyril gained unique field experience working with microfinance institutions in the Middle East. Cyril is an occasionnal lecturer on impact investing at EM Lyon and studied at Toulouse Institut d’Études Politiques where he received a Masters in Development Economics with a focus on poverty alleviation and local development.

Nikolaus Hutter

Title: Co-Founder and Advisor

Nikolaus Hutter is the Founder of New Paradigm Ventures, an advisory firm focused on accelerating the shift to an impact driven economy. He serves as an Advisor on Impact Ventures & Investment to the WWF in Switzerland, as a Director for impact investment firm Angello Capital Ltd in the UK, and on the Board of Heifer International in the US. Together with Impact Hub Vienna, he co-founded the Investment Ready Program, an accelerator for social innovators, and the CEE Impact Day, an annual gathering for impact investors and social innovators in CEE. Prior, he led the impact investor network Toniic in Europe, and worked in the VC industry for over a decade.

Elemér Eszter

Title: Chairman of the Board of Directors

Graduated as a historian, he had studied political sciences and economics in the United States and has been founder and senior officer of several small and medium enterprises. As business angel, he took part in launching several lucrative undertakings and his references also list many successful exits. Between 2002-2006 he was working for Citibank, in 2004 he co-founded a biotechnology start-up, Cryo-Innovation Ltd, that was successfully acquired by a Swedish public listed company Vitrolife. As member of the Board of Directors he leads Portus Buda Group Zrt. since 2007, developing concepts for the alternative financing of the operation of ecclesiastical institutions through the development of income-generating assets. Since 2009 he is executive director of I. PBG Befektetési Társaság Ltd investment company. Elemér is CEO and member of the Board of Directors of PBG FMC Ltd since 2011, managing a fund of 13m EUR.

Tamás Bíró

Title: Founder and Marketing Director

Founder and chief marketing officer of Barion, a company ready to disrupt the electronic payment industry. Together with his partner, they wish to conquer the world with their bank card payment solution with a radical pricing scheme and a special business model. Graduated as an engineer at Nottingham Trent University, founding the web developer company Sense/Net with his fellow students; Barion was established as a spinoff venture. Ever since the dawn of Internet, he’s been engaged with web development and e-commerce; first focusing on the technical, later on the marketing aspects. In addition to Barion, he’s an avid evangelizer of Lean, Agile, and Scrum approaches and he incessantly wants to change the way people think. In his free time he loves to cook exotic meals and learns Latin dances.

Balázs Csűrös

Balázs is a Partner at Deloitte`s Advisory service line, leading Transaction services. He has 20 years of experience in Transaction advisory, business valuations, due diligences and independent business reviews. He has been leading a number of due diligences and other projects in various sectors including manufacturing, logistics, energy, media and telecommunication in Hungary and Central Europe.

Hubert Cottogni

Title: Director, Head of Mandate Management

Director, Head of Mandate Management, European Investment Fund (EIF). He is responsible for originating and managing mandates entrusted by (1) European Investment Bank (EIB), (2) the European Commission (including the Investment Plan for Europe – EFSI/Juncker Plan, COSME, InnovFin, EaSI, ERASMUS, etc.) and (3) National as well as Regional mandates sponsored by national funds, ESIF, EARDF, ESF, etc). He is also responsible for the structuring and management of several Fund of funds advised by the EIF. In parallel, Hubert Cottogni sits on the Board of several prominent funds such as GGF and EFSE. Prior to this position, he was a Director of Telekom Austria in Vienna, where he spent over 6 years as Head of Strategy and Business Development, and later as Director of Mergers and Acquisitions. He also spent more than 12 years working as Senior Banker in institutions such as EIB and Creditanstalt AG. Mr. Cottogni holds an MBA degree from the University of Innsbruck as well as an executive degree from INSEAD.

Vic has a PhD in Mathematics, and is a skilled quantitative and big-data analyst in finance and health-care. In addition he has worked across multiple industries in strategic market analysis and product management. In Nivaura he’s focussed on operations and the legal engine.

Norbert Bial

Title: Investment Manager

Norbert Bial is an investment manager at Euroventures, one of Hungary’s oldest private equity and ventures capital funds. He joined Euroventures in 2010 and has led several investments during these years. Earlier Norbert gained unique experience in IP protection and working with early stage innovation projects as business consultant at Danubia patent and trademark office.

Zsigmond Bodnár

Title: Founder

Zsigmond is a 30-year-old businessman, charismatic entrepreneur, passionate visionary and loving dad of two children. He started his studies at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management, and he decided to continue at Stanford University where he acquired theoretical and practical knowledge of startups. FaceKom Customer Authentication and Digital Signature software targets service providers and key players of the financial sector. The solution received widespread coverage in the relevant press after its launch in June 2017 and its market entry has generated tremendous domestic and international interest. FaceKom won the prestigious Technology Solution of the Year award from the Hungarian Marketing Association in 2017. Today, FaceKom software bundle is successfully used by the 9 largest financial institutions of Hungary and looks to repeat this success across Europe.

Gergely Szügyi

Title: Investment Director

Gergely has been working with investments in the past ten years. He joined Central Investment Group in 2010, which manages three venture capital funds as well as private investments. In the recent years Gergely and his team successfully executed several transaction both on buy and sell side mainly with international parties. Beyond his investment director role, Gergely currently also the CFO of Central Media Group which is one of the significant investments of the group. We do not send any kind of ticket or voucher. Each participant is added to the conference registration list upon online check-in, which also includes the lecturers and the sponsors’ guests. In order to enter the conference, each guest will need to present a valid photo ID and sign a form. Guests may enter the venue after we cross-checked their pre-registration, they presented a valid identification document with a photo and signed the form. On-site registration is not available at this particular event. Pre-registration and payment by the date of the event at the latest is required for attendance.

CONDITIONS OF REGISTRATION, PAYMENT AND CANCELLATION

We will send a confirmation email in the case of online registration. (The data and the “Conditions of Registration, Payment and Cancellation” have to be accepted during registration.) We will send a Fee Requesting Notice by email based on the data that are approved in the course of registration after the acceptance the “Conditions of Registration, Payment and Cancellation”. The fee has to be paid within 8 workdays of the confirmation of the registration. The invoice will be issued after payment. We will post the invoice to you to the address that is given in the registration. An online application is classified as an order.

Paying the participation fee in advance is a prerequisite of participating at the event. We accept cancellations and provide a full refund – EXCLUSIVELY IN WRITING at the address of conference@portfolio.hu – till 12 hours on the fifth workday before the event. In the case of cancellations made after this time the participation may be assigned, but the complete fee has to be paid. We are not in a position to accept cancellations made via phone or in any other verbal form. It is not possible to cancel participation in the case of registrations that are made after the cancellation deadline. In the case of registrations made 1 or 2 workdays before the event it may happen that the transfer of the participation fee will not be credited to our bank account yet, therefore in this case it is possible to transfer the fee on the first workday after the event. Since online applications are classified as orders, we are not in a position to accept ex post complaints – including absence from the event, because of the lack of transferring the fee – after the cancellation deadline. The complete fee has to be paid in this case as well – provided no written cancellation was received by us till the cancellation deadline.
